Gallas saves the day for Arsenal? (Arsenal vs Charlton 30/09/06)

Panel DecisionWhilst Arsenal fans may disagree, most Charlton fans will feel aggrieved about the penalty they were denied when Gunners’ new boy William Gallas appeared to handle in the box towards the end of a game they were to lose 2-1…

The Right Result panel has decided that Gallas did handle the ball and so the awarding of a penalty to Charlton makes the new match result a 2-2 draw.

Pepe Reiner - an innocent man! (Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool 30/09/2006)

Panel DecisionBolton’s opener came courtesy of a free-kick awarded against Reds stopper Pepe Reiner for handling the ball outside the box as he drop-kicked it upfield. Watch the replay though and it shows that while the Spanish keeper did kick the ball outside the area, it was still inside when it left his hands…

The Right Result panel disallows Bolton’s first goal as the free kick was given in error. The final score is 1-0 to Bolton.

Tough going for Toffees at St James Park (Newcastle vs Everton 24/09/2006)

Panel DecisionAt the end of a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes during which two players got their marching orders and a slew of chances were created and spurned at both ends of the park, the match result was what you may call an honourable 1-1 draw. Everton fans may not see it that way though due to a number of incidents that could have swung the result…

a) Titus Bramble might have been kicking himself for his poor challenge on Leon Osman that triggered his second yellow card, but his team mates might well have been the ones doing the kicking if the ref had seen his trip on Andrew Johnson in the penalty area…

b) Scott Parker would consider himself very unlucky not to have been awarded a pen after Lee Carsley damn near took the shirt off his back in the Everton area…

c) Emre Belozoglu’s free kick for the Tynesiders found Shola Ameobi in yards of space and the Newcastle man found the back of the net with the resultant strike. However, what the officials clearly failed to spot was that a well synchronised Evertonian defence had sprung a perfect off-side trap…

The Right Result panel, having analysed the 3 above incidents, has found each to be fairly clear cut. Bramble fouled Johnson for an Everton penalty…Newcastle captain Scott Parker also should have had one for Carsley’s shirt lifting antics…Ameobi’s goal is disallowed for clear offside. The Right Result in this encounter is Newcastle 1 Everton 2

Upon such decisions… (Chelsea vs Liverpool 17/09/2006)

Panel DecisionDuring a typically feisty encounter between two teams expecting to in the shake-up when ’squeaky bottom’ time comes, Didier Drogba put in a decent claim for strike of the season whilst Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard was brought down by Frank Lampard in the penalty area, only it wasn’t given…

The Right Result Panel adjudges the incident as deserving of a Liverpool penalty, so the game is drawn 1-1.

22nd June 1986, Estadio Azteca, Mexico - England vs Argentina

In this Mexico ‘86 World Cup quarter-final between two old rivals, 6 minutes into the second half Diego Armando Maradona, probably the most awesome talent to ever to kick a football, ’scored’ a goal that no England fan who watched the match is ever likely to forget, when he challenged for a 50/50 ball with England keeper Peter Shilton and proceeded to knock the ball over Shilton and into the back of the net with his left fist. The referee and linesman missed it completely and the goal was outrageously allowed to stand.

Despite the fact that just 5 minutes later the Argentine genius followed it up with what is widely acknowledged as the finest goal in the history of the competition, Gary Lineker did peg one back for England on 81 minutes, and so The Right Result would have been a 1-1 draw. Still, given England’s fairly dismal record in extra-time and penalty shoot outs, it’s hardly nailed-on that we would have kicked on into the semis, although it would have been nice to have had a crack at it…
