The Right Result

22nd June 1986, Estadio Azteca, Mexico - England vs Argentina

In this Mexico ‘86 World Cup quarter-final between two old rivals, 6 minutes into the second half Diego Armando Maradona, probably the most awesome talent to ever to kick a football, ’scored’ a goal that no England fan who watched the match is ever likely to forget, when he challenged for a 50/50 ball with England keeper Peter Shilton and proceeded to knock the ball over Shilton and into the back of the net with his left fist. The referee and linesman missed it completely and the goal was outrageously allowed to stand.

Despite the fact that just 5 minutes later the Argentine genius followed it up with what is widely acknowledged as the finest goal in the history of the competition, Gary Lineker did peg one back for England on 81 minutes, and so The Right Result would have been a 1-1 draw. Still, given England’s fairly dismal record in extra-time and penalty shoot outs, it’s hardly nailed-on that we would have kicked on into the semis, although it would have been nice to have had a crack at it…

Yeah well, everyone moans about it but you can’t help but admire that other goal of his. Still, he’s a cheating little **** though and the goal should never have stood.

As the time’s past the second goal now way overshadows the HOG goal for me to be honest. He was without doubt the best footballer of all time - the only person I think you could actually say practically won the World Cup all on his own. And the same with the Scudetto when he won with Napoli.

That second goal from Maradona was simply sublime and there is no reason to think that had the HOG goal not gone in that he would not have created another goal during that match. He was too much for the English defence on the day.

He would have definitely have gone on and done more like scout says, Maradonna was simply unplayable at that time. It’s sad he’s so ill again as he’s only 46 years old, the whole thing’s a bit of a tragedy really as he was in my opinion the best player ever.

If you watch this the build-up is sensational really. Of course the goal was a complete travesty but he was so bloody good I actually almost don’t care all these years on!

I have to admit that all these years have passed and I have never got over the injustice. His 2nd goal was of course sublime and I think we would admit that had Lineker scored a ‘Hand of Gary’ goal we would not care on iota.

However I have also still not got over the fact that Lineker never got a 2nd when he ended up in the net but the ball just got flicked away at the last second…….

Diego shud hav been sent off 4 deliberate handball so therefore England would have won this match, and that goal would never have happened. result 1-0 england.

There’s also every chance that without the HOG goal, the players would not have been crestfallen and not only may have avoided going 2-0 down, but may have gone 1-0 instead.

And that bit where Lineker ended up in the net…he had the chance to reach with his hand too.
