Tough going for Toffees at St James Park (Newcastle vs Everton 24/09/2006)
At the end of a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes during which two players got their marching orders and a slew of chances were created and spurned at both ends of the park, the match result was what you may call an honourable 1-1 draw. Everton fans may not see it that way though due to a number of incidents that could have swung the result…
a) Titus Bramble might have been kicking himself for his poor challenge on Leon Osman that triggered his second yellow card, but his team mates might well have been the ones doing the kicking if the ref had seen his trip on Andrew Johnson in the penalty area…
b) Scott Parker would consider himself very unlucky not to have been awarded a pen after Lee Carsley damn near took the shirt off his back in the Everton area…
c) Emre Belozoglu’s free kick for the Tynesiders found Shola Ameobi in yards of space and the Newcastle man found the back of the net with the resultant strike. However, what the officials clearly failed to spot was that a well synchronised Evertonian defence had sprung a perfect off-side trap…
The Right Result panel, having analysed the 3 above incidents, has found each to be fairly clear cut. Bramble fouled Johnson for an Everton penalty…Newcastle captain Scott Parker also should have had one for Carsley’s shirt lifting antics…Ameobi’s goal is disallowed for clear offside. The Right Result in this encounter is Newcastle 1 Everton 2
