Champions League 06/07

Liverpool won it two years back and Arsenal came within a whisker this summer. Can this be the start of a golden period in Europe for English teams, and does it confirm the widely held notion (well the British press anyway) that the English Premier League is now the strongest league in the world?

Who will win the Champions League this season?

  • Manchester United (27%)
  • Chelsea (22%)
  • Arsenal (19%)
  • Barcelona (8%)
  • AC Milan (8%)
  • Liverpool (8%)
  • Real Madrid (5%)
  • Inter Milan (3%)

Chelsea - we’ve got the best chance we’ve ever had this year, demonstrated by the result at Barca on Tuesday. It may have been a physical battle for sure, and the papers have already had their say on what a disgrace to the game it was blah blah blah, but regardless of that, it’s going to take a huge performance to put Chelsea down and I fancy us for the big one.

It was a disgrace on Tuesday, but not the football or the rough stuff on display (I mean that’s pretty much Chelsea all over isn’t it), but my big problem is Mourinho and his antics. I appreciate that he deflects attention and criticism away from his team, which isn’t a bad strategy since there’s so much of it, but his whole attitude to the game is sour and negative, and it’s a shame because (and I hate to say this) I think Chelsea could do it without his theatrics and just beat teams straight up. They’d win some respect that way as well.

I don’t know why, but ive got a feeling Manchester United will win it this season, they are playing blinding football in the league at the moment and if they can keep it up and repeat there performances in the league to the champions league, they will give anyone a run for there money.

I fancy Man U now as well, they’re playing great and they have that old winning habit back. Liverpool may have beaten Barca but to be honest even though they did I don’t think they’ve got the quality in the final third to go all the way, whereas Man U do. As for Chelsea, well let’s just hope they don’t win it because that would be awful.

I like Liverpool’s chances, they seem to have the mental toughness and the Anfield crowd bring something to the European nights that no other fans seem to. Plus they don’t really have anything else to play for this season except 3/4th spot in the prem, which they’ll get one of so it’s nothing to get excited about, so the emphasis is on the CL, and Rafa does seem to have the knack!

Chelsea will have a surprise against Valencia, a good team who have a good chance. Anything but Chelsea to win this competition is good, as a club they have no manners and also the way they play we in Spain consider them to be anti football. I think Francesc Fabregas also said this and he is correct. Maybe Liverpool also have a good opportunity to win again, with Gerrard spirit anything is possible.

Yes Pedro, I completely share your Chelsea sentiments, to a tee. I also think the last round of the draw was a fix with all the English clubs avoiding each other. A bit too unlikely for me but then I’ve always liked a bit of conspiracy!

Anyway, I reckon AC will bring home the bacon as Kaka is a sensational player and he makes a habit of turing up for the big ones.

Another reason for my wanting AC Milan is of course that the eternal legend that is Luther Blisset played there, and for me anything that has even the slightest Blisset connection is pure gold!

Now let’s see if Chelsea can turn in a performance tonight and join us in the semis - assuming that we don’t concede 3 at Anfield, which is very unlikely on a European night…

Got to be AC Milan for me, they look strong. **** performance last night by their standards and they were lucky to get a pen, but I still fancy them over Liverpool or Chelsea, both of who should go to the semi.

AC were very lucky to get the penalty last night - look at it here. I’m not sure Kaka dived particularly but the ref made a really poor call.

Is there even any doubt in anyone’s mind after last night’s stunner against Roma - it probably ranks as the greatest European performance by an English club ever. GO ON YOU REDS!!

Horrible to admit and I feel dirty saying it but yes that was a great performance and so credit where it’s due. Frankly so long as Liverpool don’t win it I couldn’t care less!

Manchester United is too much for every team, because they have Ronaldo, Rooney, Tévez
