Andre Ooijer’s ‘handball’ (Aston Villa vs Blackburn 5/11/2006)

Panel DecisionRef Dermot Gallagher awarded a penalty against Andre Ooijer for handball which Gareth Barry converted, much to the well publicised chagrin of Blackburn boss Mark Hughes…

The Right Result panel feels that there was no intentional handball and the so penalty should not have been given. Despite that, and of little consolation to Hughes, The Right Result is 1-0  to the Villa and they still take the 3 points.

The decision was shocking because the referee who was actually nearer to the incident didn’t give! It was the linesman who flagged and this isn’t the first time this has happened eg. Lucas Neill against Sheffield United. I personally think the ball hit the corner between his shoulder and chest and he didn’t wave his arm out to stop the ball. Therefore, the penalty should never have been given and I don’t care what people say, it did affect the game and result because it was right before half-time. Had we gone in 0-0 then it was a totally different game! We’ve had so many dodgy decisions go against us this season its starting to get silly! Sort it out officials
