TOTTENHAM vs READING - Right result, wrong reasons

Panel Decision
In this humdinger of a game, Greg Halford was adjudged to have handballed in the area. However, it was unintentional and didn’t justify the award of a penalty. Later in the game, Defoe’s goal was wrongly ruled out for off-side. Berbatov was in an offside position, but didn’t become active in the play.

The Right Result was a 1-0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur.

I’d just about grudgingly agree that it wasn’t a deliberate handball by Halford, and I’d have been really pissed off if you hadn’t spotted the perfectly good goal Jermaine netted and left it at 0-0, but fair enough.

I would have thought that Berbatov was interfering with play - like Cloughie said ‘if he’s not, then what’s he doing on the pitch!’

Exactly, and since it’s Spurs we’re discussing I think 0-0 would have been fine!! No not really, actually I thought the first one should have been a penalty - we had the same thing happen to us a few weeks back (can’t remember the player) but it seems that refs aren’t consistent with what is and what isn’t ball-to-hand.

This is the same thing with all countries I feel. The directive must be unclear because there is no consistent - this weekend a handball against Puyol was not given (ok for me!!) but I cannot see why.

It wasn’t a penalty - just watch it:

Clearly ball-to-hand. Lucky for us the panel gave us Defoe’s ‘offside’ goal or we’d be even further off the pace in this new league table! Which is a great idea by the way, definitely a new one!

I am so ******* disgusted about the ‘penalty’ last night against Seville that I had to mention it on here. It’s an absolute disgrace that the ref gave it and it could easily cost us our place in the competition. Watching it again just makes the decision even more unbelievable. Let’s hope we can put it right at the lane.

Agreed, it was a dreadful decision. It almost feels like a stitch-up for me, it reminded me of Henry’s goal that was disallowed in Russia earlier in the season. Seems like both of our teams have been turned over this season in Europe.
