January 2005, Old Trafford - Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur
In an incident that will forever rankle with Spurs fans as it could have been said to have cost them a UEFA Cup spot that season, Pedro Mendes hit a cracking instinctive lob from fully 55 yards out that beat United keeper Roy Carroll. The linesman and referee Mark Clattenburg may well have been the only two people at Old Trafford that day who failed to spot the fact that the ball crossed the line by at least half a yard and declined to award the goal, denying Spurs their first league win at Old Trafford since 1989.

Possibly the most ridiculous decision that I can recall, as far as we’re concerned anyway. How the ref and the lino missed it is beyond comprehension.

We lucked out here for sure! One good thing to come from it though was the departure of the utterly dreadful Roy Carroll as keeper.

I think its a bit harsh to blame the ref and linesmen, they as everyone else were taken by surprise by the 50 yard lob. How could they have kept up with play.
Rule is!! unsure if it crossed the line, don’t give it

I wonder how many times you all had to sit there watching it and how slow you had to watch it to see that it was a goal??
answers on a postcard please??

:) Watching it in Real Time it clearly was a goal and Spurs were indeed robbed that season (much like the season spurs myseriously got food poisoning, causing? them to lose at Fulham and gift Arsenal 4th place).

You lost to Fulham on the last day of that season? Not only poisoned by food, maybe you had a little bit too much alcohol in you since you were actually beaten by West Ham that day, while Arsenal beat Wigan at the same time… Oh, happy day!
