WIGAN vs MIDDLESBROUGH - Downing’s double-touch

Saturday 6th May 2007

Panel Decision

In taking the free-kick that created Middlesbrough’s goal, Stewart Downing kicked the ball against his standing leg. As he therefore ‘touched’ the ball twice before any other player, the free-kick becomes invalid and the goal should have been disallowed.

The Right Result is a 0-0 draw.

I’m not sure about this one - he didn’t intentionally do it. Isn’t there anything in the rules about that. A bit like if you handball in the box clearly unintentionally then it generally doesn’t get penalised.

I agree with Paul Jewell that the double touch was extremely probable, but even still frames on MOTD weren’t conclusive, so we can’t reasonably expect the referee to catch what still frames couldn’t. The free kick award itself was a bit soft, so even as a Boro fan I’d have to admit we were lucky with this one.
