ASTON VILLA vs LIVERPOOL - Gerrard ‘earns’ an opening win for Reds
Saturday 11th August 2007

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was fortunate to be awarded the free kick that lead to the last-minute winner against Villa as Petrov quite clearly got a piece of the ball before Gerrard ran into him. Despite Martin O’Neill’s remarkable restraint in his post-match conference, Alan Hansen calling out a Liverpool player for simulation says it all really. It’s a historical repeat for Steven as he was involved in the first Right Result incident of last season when during the opening game against Sheffield United he was considered lucky to be awarded the penalty that gave the Reds a last-gasp draw.
The Right Result is a 1-1 draw.

Why the hell is it that Gerrard consistently gets away with diving and conning the referee. He is a good player for sure but he is very guilty of this. If he was a foreign player and not the England VC I bet people would get on his back about it..

What about the penalty decision that should never have been? The ball took a deflection and hit Carragher, his arm was by his side and never moved towards the ball.
The right result should have been 1-0.

Carra’s handball was clearly ball-to-hand, should never have been a penalty!

Thing about the ball-to-hand is that so much of the time the refs give them that I think you have to expect the worst, so it’s not that much of a surprise to see it given unfortunately. I agree that it shouldn’t have been a pen but I do think that the Gerrard free kick was much more dubious if I’m cold about it, and so 1-1 makes some sense. Good to see the Reds get 3 points though in reality (which is what counts!) - about time we got off to a start before October!!!!!

the fair result was a liverpool win, dominated the match and should have scored a hatful. and in my opinion it was a freekick because despite making contact with the ball petrovs still pulled gerrard down illegally.

How come when Ronaldo scores freekicks from a Man U player diving rightresult ignores it but when its Liverpool they disallow the goal?
They never disallowed the first Birm goal against Arsenal either when that resulted from a wrongly given freekick.
rightresult doesnt seem consistent with teams
