EVERTON vs LIVERPOOL - Toffees Clattered

Panel Decision

As usual the Merseyside derby was packed with drama and controversy and, on this occasion, all the major decisions appeared to go against the blue half of the city. New England defender Joleon Lescott will feel particularly hard done by. With the game evenly poised in the second–half, ref Mark Clattenburg turned down his penalty appeal when he tangled in the area with Steve Finnan. If that decision remained dubious, there was little or no doubt about the incident in the last seconds of the game when Lescott was wrestled to the ground by a guilty-looking Jamie Carragher in front of the Gwladys Street goal. Unfortunately for Everton, just about the only doubt that remained was in the mind of the Tyne & Wear whistler and the seemingly certain penalty wasn’t given. To make matters worse, moments earlier, Liverpool’s match-winning spot-kick was converted by Dirk Kuyt. How he remained on the pitch after an earlier airborne tackle on Phil Neville remains a mystery.

The Right Result is a 2-2 draw.

I thought that means 2 penalties for Everton and a 3-2 scoreline?

  • 2. Gaz  |  October 22nd, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Also Kuyt should have been off. 3-1?

  • 3. Lee  |  October 22nd, 2007 at 2:52 pm

How come we stay on the same points in the Right Result league if we ‘got’ a 2-2 draw?

I agree with Dande though - we should have had two pens meaning 3-2 home win :)

  • 4. Omar  |  October 22nd, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Even as a Liverpool fan I can’t disagree there, we got lucky but it cancels out the shocker Rob Styles had against us for Chelsea. These things even out. Sort of.

Apologies for not making it clear that we actually turned down the first Lescott penalty appeal so, to confirm, the Right Result is a 2-2 draw. That takes Everton to 14 points in the Right Result table compared to 13 in the EPL table.

so who would have taken the second penalty if the cheesy faced dutchman had been dismissed?

  • 7. Billywhizz  |  October 22nd, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Not a bad question - Carragher?!

  • 8. Adam  |  October 22nd, 2007 at 8:01 pm

I thought the Penalty for Chelsea canceled out the wrongfully given free kick during the Villa game which Gerrard converted to win.

  • 9. Dande  |  October 23rd, 2007 at 4:39 am

I wonder what Omar will say if the derby happened before the chelsea game. Will he say that it’s ok for chelsea to rob 2 points off them and this cancel out the undeserved win in the derby?

I think the last minute incident is such a clear cut penalty and happened at such a crucial moment that it overshadowed the earlier incident. I think that’s why you dismissed the first incident.

  • 10. Wizbit (Team - Everton)  |  October 23rd, 2007 at 8:04 am

How come no mention on the dubious first Liverpool penalty? That was even less clear cut than Everton’s first penalty claim.

Has to be either a 2-1 or 3-2 home win.

  • 11. Capman  |  October 23rd, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Liverpools first penalty was clearly outside the box, I’m not a rocket scientist but that means its a freekick not a penalty. Everton 2-1 winners.

  • 12. BLOCK103  |  October 23rd, 2007 at 5:00 pm

How about Kuyt’s dissallowed goal at 0-0? He wasn’t offside giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead and both Liverpool penalties were correct decisions.

What kind of ‘right result’ ignores a wrongly disallowed goal!?!?!?!

  • 13. TheoRacle  |  October 24th, 2007 at 12:33 am

Long throw to Lescott for final penalty claim was a foul throw too! It’s a bit too easy to pick and choose the disputed decisions and just reverse those that suit you better don’t you think?

  • 14. CdnRedMan  |  October 24th, 2007 at 4:06 am

This so-called, clear-cut penalty occurred at the 94 minute mark of a 93 minute match. Take that one away. Even if you give the first penalty decision and allow Kuyt’s disallowed goal, the result is still a 3-2 win for Liverpool.

Surely the most disappointing thing is Gerrard coercing the referee. One professional footballer trying the get another banned is despicable and Steven has let himself down badly!

  • 16. daniel  |  October 24th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Foul throw my a**** riise has never taken a proper throw in in his life. the ball never goes behind his head. Kuyt was offside for the disallowed goal. We were lucky to win this game. And as a red I am ashamed of the attitude of Carregher and Gerrard and Benitez. they are not real liverpool players nor manager.

  • 17. CdnRedMan  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:40 am

This whole ‘one professional shouldn’t try to get another professional sent off’ is the biggest load of **** going around. The fact is that the last Everton defender brought Stevie Gerrard down when he would have otherwise been clean through on goal. Whether the foul happened inside or outside the box is irrelevent to the fact that the Everton player by rule should have been sent off. Why should any Liverpool players be compelled to pass up the justice that is coming to them in that circumstance? Do we ask the families of murder victims not to speak at the trials of those that commit the crimes for fear that the guilty might actually receive the sentence prescribed by law? Diving and feigning injury in a bid to get an opposing player sent off is one thing, urging the referee to uphold the laws of the game is another thing entirely.

  • 18. paddy  |  October 29th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

yep everton should have won 3-1

  • 19. Symes  |  November 2nd, 2007 at 9:56 am

anyone notice that Clattenburg also referee’d Wigan V Liverpool - 5 points he has “won” for Liverpool
Refs are supposed to highlight any allegiance to particular clubs
    C’mon Clattenburg - fess up !!!

  • 20. Wizbit (Team - Everton)  |  November 7th, 2007 at 9:11 am

re Gerrard having a word with Clattenberg: If the referee decided that Hibbert had fouled Gerrard, then yes, he should been sent off… but the point is that no player should be allowed to influence the referee’s decisions. It is no different to a player waving an imaginary card when he has been fouled to ‘remind’ the ref to book the offender. It’s just very unsporting and speaks volumes about the Kopites defending Gerrards actions.

re 94th minute of 93: I believe the 4th official indicated that there would be a minimum of 3 minutes injury time. Ask Gary McAllister about it…

re Kuyt’s disallowed goal: I have not seen this on TV, but even if it wasn’t offside, the Everton players heard the whistle and stopped moving.

  • 21. Leachy_No9  |  November 29th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

The penalty awarded against Tony Hibbert was not a penalty as the contact made with Steven Gerrard was made outside of the Penalty area. Although Hibbert was the last man and by the rules of the game should have been sent off it was Gerrards meddling that saw him sent from the pitch.

Maybe the correct scoreline should have been 2-1 or even 3-1 if both penalties for fouls on Lescott were given.

Click on the link to see a photo of the point where Hibbert made contact with Gerrard.

As a blue, I must agree we deserved the two penalties but with it being everton…..can we say honestly that we’d score them? We’ve missed more pens than we’ve scored this season!

  • 23. Danny  |  February 23rd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

To number 14, the referee indicates a MINIMUM amount of added time!

  • 24. Trevor Powell  |  February 27th, 2008 at 11:09 pm

Just been reading some of the Red commnets who seem to believe in that age old but discredited theory that TWO WRONGS MAKE A RIGHT to justify the actions of Carragher and Gerrard as well as Benitez’s toatlly unacceptable excuses.

  • 25. Cooperman95  |  February 28th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Pathetic bleating reds, Clattenburg won that game for Liverpool simple. three major decisions wrong, 1. 1st Penalty outside the box
    2. Kuyt challenge on Neville definite red card
    3. Carragher mugging Lescott in the box definite
    penalty.

Thats not to mention Gerrard’s appauling behavior in coercing the ref to send Hibbert off, wether the decision to give him a red or a yellow was right or wrong It’s none of his F******g business what action the ref takes after a decision is made and what the hell is CdnRedman on about comparing the situation to families of a victim in a murder trial!!! clearly looking at the time you sent the message it had been a long night!!

All this proves that the “Big four” get the rub of the green when it comes to decisions end of story, thats how it is and always will be the rest of us just have to get on with it and despite that at the time of writing we are three points clear of the red S**** even without the refs on our side COYB

  • 31. Katie  |  March 31st, 2008 at 2:47 pm

Kuyt shouldn’t have been on the pitch for his tackle on Phil Neville. What I don’t understand is that he didn’t evn get a yellow card for that but Arteta got a yellow card for taking a free kick too early against blackburn !??

  • 32. roddysul  |  April 3rd, 2008 at 10:54 am

Everton’s penalty incident at the end of the game -

surely it was a foul throw anyway.

  • 33. tomEFC  |  April 27th, 2008 at 6:17 pm

the penalty gerrard won was outside the box when hibbert first made contact….2-1 everton!

  • 34. Colm  |  May 17th, 2008 at 11:33 am

How on earth was this game not awarded to Everton?! Some of the most scandalous one sided decisions I have ever seen in a game.

Gerrard pen was outsude the box and probably a dive anyway. So no red card either

Liverpool’s Kyte should have been sent off

Everton had 2 pens not given,

Score should be about 3 or 4-1 to Everton

  • 35. Jaycee  |  May 21st, 2008 at 2:54 pm

No doubt the referee was just subconsciously awarding decisions to Liverpool. But, to be honest, it looked like foul play to me. Dreadful performance and quite costly to Everton, the real victors of the game. Did this damage their CL aspirations? Almost certainly it did, in my opinion. Still, like usual, Liverpool got the breaks.

  • 36. Timmy S  |  May 26th, 2008 at 5:56 am

Everyone is going on about Kuyt’s two footed tackle. Never a red as he never made contact. Typical blue shite not reading the rules…..

But yes, it was a cert penalty at the end. Oh well, everything evens out by the end of the year..
