CHELSEA v LIVERPOOL - Javier lets it slip
Sunday 10 February 2008

Those who believe that erroneous refereeing decisions even themselves out over a season will be encouraged by events at Stamford Bridge. Back in August , Chelsea were wrongly awarded a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Anfield. In the return fixture, it’s the Blues who suffer as they should have been awarded a spot-kick for Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano’s clumsy 25th minute challenge on Joe Cole. The point was forcibly made that a free-kick would have been awarded had the offence taken place outside the area. Notably, ref Mike Riley awarded 34 free-kicks for fouls - more than in any other Premier League game this weekend.
The Right Result is a 1-0 win for Chelsea.

Trader is absolutely correct.
This site is fundamentally flawed as it equates the award of a penalty to a goal scored. We know this not to be the case, penalties are sometimes missed or saved.
I believe it was just last week that they equated an perfectly good goal that disallowed (incorrectly) for offside with a penalty claim that was turned down. Those are not the same thing. In one case the ball is legally in the back of the net, in the other case it is on the penalty spot waiting to be converted.

Trader has a point but come on there’s no need to take whether or not the penalty would have been scored too seriously. You can’t blame RR for awarding every ‘penalty’ as a goal - what else are they supposed to do? Count every 5th penalty as saved? That would just stir up even more debate.

RR is perfectly correct to count every penalty as scored because they count every free-kick that should have been awarded as missed.
ie: If every 5th penalty is missed, every 5th ’shot-on-goal’ free-kick is scored. It kind of balances itself out.
Of course it’s not an exact science, but it’s better than what we have already got. Plus it is beginning to show that Liverpool players believe they have some kind of immunity to fouling opposition players in the area.

considering loserpool have stevie “fall over, whimper at the ref till he gives you a pen or free kick” me, what you say is ridiculously hypocritcial michelle Y.N.W.T.L. it was a blatant pen but the ref was scared of upsetting the media after the last time anyone gave a pen against you lot.
