LIVERPOOL v BLACKBURN ROVERS - Rueful Roberts
Saturday 12 April 2008

With all the shenanigans that are going on in the Anfield boardroom, Liverpool can be thankful that things are going so well on the pitch, as displayed in the comfortable dismissal of Blackburn Rovers. Although the Reds may be aggrieved that they had a number of penalty appeals turned down, Rovers were rightly left feeling what-might-have-been after Jason Roberts’ first-half opener was disallowed for offside. However, the former Wigan Athletic frontrunner was shown to be level with last defender Martin Skrtel.
The Right Result is a 3-2 win for Liverpool.

Um….. so do the penatlies and free kicks not get taken into account then? The foul on torres in the second half was a pen, he took the player out and got nothing of the ball, isnt that a pen then?? Then the second one of Gerrard could have been given, he gets blocked and pushed off the ball by Samba i believe would was lucky to be on the field as he clearly fouled Gerrard in the first half when through on goal, which was a stone wall free kick.
Also if you watch the replay of the Blackburn goal, the ref blows up as soon as the ball is played, so liverpools back four and keeper stop, and dont bothered making any attempt to block the shot.
So the right result, even if you give Blackburn that goal, would be at the very least 4-2 for the Torres pen, excluding the gerrard pen in the second half and the kick free and the fact that they should have been down to 10 men!

yeah spot on, Reina didn’t even bother trying to save the shot, so this is different from other instances where there’s been a late flag/keeper hasn’t heard the whistle.

Liverpool fans seem blinkered again - yawn - I seem to recall a dive from Mr untouchable Stevie G that went unpunished and a horror tackle by Skertel in the first half - again unpunished(booked in second half).
So to be fair to the panel comment “Rovers where left wondering what might have been” is a decent comment. The fact Torres didn’t get a penalty might be a result of him being the worst diver in the Prem, bit of a shame as he is class.

First off, on the 18th anniversary of 15th April 1989, I think we can all agree that however we feel about the injustices highlighted by the Right Result, they pale into insignificance in those terms.
Having previously commented on how “fortunate” LFC have been this season, it’s only fair to acknowledge that in this match, by the Right Result rules, they were a little hard done by.
Admittedly, I only saw the highlights on MoTD (as an Evertonian I don’t waste time watching other teams
), but from what I saw, Liverpool should have had at least 1 definite penalty (foul on Torres). Personally, I think Gerrard dived for his 2 claims, but we’ve all seen softer claims given (not to Everton of course - we’ve forgotten what penalties are!), so I can see how reds would be disappointed with those decisions.
Samba (was it him?) should definitely have been sent off for the shoulder barge in Gerrard’s back just outside the box, as it denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
On the other hand, Skrtel (sp?) should have gone, and I agree that the first Blackburn goal should have stood. If the ref thought Gerrard dived for either of his pen claims, he should have been booked as well, and in the current climate, probably for his dissent after one of them as well (and before anyone comes back mentioning the Yak’s recent form in the diving stakes, yes he should have had at least one booking in recent games too).
Following the RR rules, I would say the game should have ended 4-2, but those rules don’t take into account how a game might be changed by disallowed goals standing and/or bookings/sendings off not given. I understand why - you simply can’t tell how those things would change a game.
Basically, the ref in question had a shocker in this match. It happens. We’ve all had bad days in the office, and certainly every player makes mistakes in every game. But in this case, at least it didn’t affect the result, so hardly a major injustice in football terms, and today at least, we should probably all be concentrating on the more important things in life - JFT96.

Gotta say this seems a little harsh again from the RR team on Liverpool and you can’t really say it’s reds fans moaning. OK Skrtel should have gone and it quite clearly wasn’t an offside however the entire Liverpool team stopped after the ref blew his whistle and Roberts just banged it into basically an open net in frustration I wouldn’t really call it a disallowed goal as the whistle went before the goal was scored.
Also out of the four penalty shouts at least one was a clear cut penalty and Samba should have been sent off as well. Out of the two Gerrard shouts they were both 50-50 calls and if the ref thought he dived he should have booked him. Over all I think the rr was 4-2.

personally i think roberts should have been booked for kicking the ball away when he was/wasnt offside, the whistle had clearly gone!1 then id have sent him off for screaming at the ref for not sending skrtel off!1 both were incidents of dissent, dont you all think!!
