Bobby Zamora’s first Premier League goal in almost exactly a year arrived with relegated Derby County’s visit to Upton Park and - sure enough, just like buses - the second should have come along minutes later. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker last found the net with the winner against Everton on 21 April 2007 before giving the Hammers a 20th minute lead against the Rams. No. 2 seemed to have followed 12 minutes later, only to be wrongly denied for an offside offence.

WIGAN ATHLETIC v TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR - Mario’s hands on job

Wigan Athletic appear to have escaped the clutches of relegation from the Premier League but the Latics’ status in the Right Result table isn’t quite as secure as we deny them the point from Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to the JJB. Clearly, Spurs should have been awarded a first-half penalty after Mario Melchiot pulled Dimitar Berbatov down by the shoulders to prevent the Bulgarian striker taking advantage of a goalscoring opportunity.
The Right Result is a 2-1 win for Tottenham Hotspur.

LIVERPOOL v BLACKBURN ROVERS - Rueful Roberts

With all the shenanigans that are going on in the Anfield boardroom, Liverpool can be thankful that things are going so well on the pitch, as displayed in the comfortable dismissal of Blackburn Rovers. Although the Reds may be aggrieved that they had a number of penalty appeals turned down, Rovers were rightly left feeling what-might-have-been after Jason Roberts’ first-half opener was disallowed for offside. However, the former Wigan Athletic frontrunner was shown to be level with last defender Martin Skrtel.
The Right Result is a 3-2 win for Liverpool.

BOLTON WANDERERS v WEST HAM UNITED - Walton weakens

Having led the way throughout the season, Peter Walton’s claim as the top referee under Right Result regulations is under threat. Although it was an offside decision, the Northamptonshire official was perfectly placed to over-rule Bolton Wanderers’ disallowed goal. The ’scorer’ El Hadji Diouf was at least level following Bolton’s free-kick towards the end of the first-half. Captain Kevin Nolan was in an offside position but did not interfere with play.
The Right Result is a 2-0 win for Bolton Wanderers.

DERBY COUNTY v ASTON VILLA - Small mercy

You get the feeling that 12 May cannot come soon enough for beleaguered Derby County. Already relegated and cut adrift at the bottom of the table, the latest humbling was their heaviest-ever defeat at Pride Park. The minimal consolation is that they should not have been hit for six by Aston Villa - it should have been five. As the player nearest to the goalline, Gabby Agbonlahor was in an offside position for Villa’s second goal and it appears that he did touch the ball.
The Right Result is a 5-0 win for Aston Villa.

SUNDERLAND v MANCHESTER CITY - Luckless Black Cats

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson is in danger of giving managers a good name for their sporting honesty after admitting that his team were rather fortunate to come away from Sunderland with all three points. The former England coach accepted: “We were lucky. There was contact for the penalty but it was still a bit harsh.” We actually doubt there was any contact at all when Nyron Nosworthy challenged Daniel Sturridge and don’t think a penalty should have been awarded. We definitely think there was contact when Richard Dunne nearly took the shirt off Kenwyne Jones’ back and almost throttled Michael Chopra into the bargain. So the penalty award goes in the direction of the Black Cats.

ARSENAL v LIVERPOOL - Staying alive

Manchester United’s draw at Middlesbrough on Sunday means the race for the title is still alive but, in the world of the Right Result, it’s Arsenal who are the only other remaining genuine contender. Late in their game against Liverpool at the Emirates, which was tantalisingly poised at 1-1, we believe - especially compared to some of the spot-kicks that have been given in recent weeks - the Gunners should have been awarded a penalty when Leiva Lucas pulled at Cesc Fabregas’ arm. For the record, we did also review United’s penalty claim at Boro when Andrew Taylor blocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s fierce shot with his arm, but we could not be certain that handball could be classed as deliberate.
The Right Result is a 2-1 win for Arsenal.

BIRMINGHAM CITY v MANCHESTER CITY - Doing it with Styles

It’s the end of March, each team has played 32 games and only two points separate positions 13 to 19 in the Right Result table. With that in mind, it’s probably just as well that ref Rob Styles’ decision - described by the esteemed Match of the Day pundit Mark Lawrenson as “the worst penalty I’ve ever seen given” - changed the scoreline rather than the result at St Andrews’. The coming together of Birmingham City’s Gary McSheffrey and Manchester City’s Sun Jihai appeared to be nothing more than a good old fashioned shoulder charge. If anything, it was the Blues forward who was the aggressor. To irk the Manchester camp further (even Sven was getting a tad peeved), McSheffrey got up, dusted himself down and clinically despatched the spot-kick.

CHELSEA v ARSENAL - Drog’s double

On a sooper-dooper, grand slam showdown super Sunday, with the spotlight of controversy focused elsewhere, a crucial illegitimate goal received little attention on a vital day in the race for the title. For the second time in five days, a Right Result offside ruling goes against Didier Drogba. Again it was a marginal decision, but the Chelsea striker was in an offside position when a free-kick was played up to him, and he was the next player to touch the ball, before he struck the first of his two goals against Arsenal.
The Right Result is a 1-1 draw.

EVERTON v WEST HAM UNITED - Yak backed

Everton’s gallant bid for a Champions’ League place should have gained more momentum with a win against West Ham United at Goodison Park. Already leading 1-0 through Ayegbeni Yakubu, the Nigerian striker had a second goal disallowed for offside. Irrelevant of who played the ball to him, the former Middlesbrough man was clearly shown to be in an onside position. The Hammers’ subsequent leveller merely added salt to the earlier wound.
