BIRMINGHAM CITY vs WEST HAM - Hammers stretch lead
Saturday 18th August 2007

Birmingham City are still searching for their first win of the season following the clash with West Ham at St Andrews, but the Hammers should have run out more comfortable winners as Keiron Dyer was brought down by Stephen Kelly having surged into the area…
The Right Result is a 2-0 victory for West Ham.
BIRMINGHAM CITY vs SUNDERLAND - Bad decisions cancel each other out
Wednesday 15th August 2007

In this tough battle between two promoted sides Stern John’s last-gasp strike levelled the game and not only earned Roy Keane’s men a share of the spoils but help cement their reputation for fighting to the death. However there were two controversial incidents during the game. A push by Stephen Kelly on David Connolly in first-half should have seen Keith Stroud award the Black Cats a penalty. The second Sunderland goal should have been disallowed because Roy O’Donovan held down Birmingham keeper Doyle.

DIG THE NEW BREED III
Well, he’s English. Not overbearingly egotistic. No looking for ‘returns on investments’, ‘brand penetration’ or ‘reckless borrowing.’ He’s never said ‘soccer.’ Surely Peter Hill-Wood’s “sort.” Yep, I can see the headlines: “Sooty buys Arsenal.” Worse than genuine recent headlines? The Mail and Express headlined a front-page story on one housing survey, claiming diametrically opposed price trends. Then the Telegraph ran: “Ecclestone may seek Kroenke as ally” the day after its sister paper ran: “Ecclestone to fight Kroenke…” Much of this speculation surrounded Formula One’s Bernie Ecclestone - and daughter Tamara’s “romantic involvement” with ex-Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein’s son, Gavin. Suggesting Arsenal’s future could hinge on arguments over who got to read the latest Harry Potter first.

DIG THE NEW BREED II
In a summer of Premiership takeover talk it is suitably insane for newspaper column inches (yards!) to deal with an Arsenal takeover not yet happening. But it is a ‘work in progress’ – not unlike the team – so we’ll return to them.
Another takeover yet to happen is Blackburn Rovers. Many regard Sir Jack Walker as pioneering this ‘buying success’ malarkey, although he had the nous to spend, spend, spend when no-one else was. So it’s nice to see Blackburn, briefly, in this summer’s saga…

ASTON VILLA vs LIVERPOOL - Gerrard ‘earns’ an opening win for Reds
Saturday 11th August 2007

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was fortunate to be awarded the free kick that lead to the last-minute winner against Villa as Petrov quite clearly got a piece of the ball before Gerrard ran into him. Despite Martin O’Neill’s remarkable restraint in his post-match conference, Alan Hansen calling out a Liverpool player for simulation says it all really. It’s a historical repeat for Steven as he was involved in the first Right Result incident of last season when during the opening game against Sheffield United he was considered lucky to be awarded the penalty that gave the Reds a last-gasp draw.
