EVERTON v ASTON VILLA - Penalty patience
Sunday 27 April 2008

Everton are the only club in this season’s Premier League who have yet to be awarded a penalty. We believed that should have changed in Game No. 36 with Aston Villa’s visit to Goodison Park. Shortly before the first of the four shared goals in a pulsating second-half, Villa’s Stilian Petrov blocked Lee Carsley’s shot with his arm. The Bulgarian midfielder had his arm outstretched and, due to the distance the ball travelled, had the opportunity to take evasive action.
The Right Result is a 3-2 win for Everton.

Before the Chelsea v Man U penalty i would have disagreed with a penalty being given for this incident, but now… it’s just another example of Everton being ripped off this season.
Having said that we shouldn’t have needed this penalty, we were really really sloppy for both their equalisers… cardinal rule for any defender on a cross is, never let it bounce.
As for the second goal, what Arteta was thinking letting Barry have all that time i’ll never know. even Carsley (who was easily man of the match, I mean Barry put 2 decent crosses in and got it, Carsley put in one excellent cross, and kept Villa quiet all afternoon in open play) should have done a bit more.

Watch the Villa goal again and see how Carew keeps his arm over Lescott’s shoulder to stop him heading the cross away. Right result 3-1 to Everton.

Penalties may be awarded for handball or use of the arm. The chest/shoulder area doesn’t count so you’ve got this one wrong. I note with interest david Moyes’s failure to even mention the incident when interviewed after the match.

I watched most of this game and personally from a naturals point of view i thought villa were the better team but credit to everton for twice taking the lead. As for the penatly, i may be wrong but i dont recall Moyes mentioning after the game and i dont recall any everton players calling for handball either.

Carsley was the one who had the shot blocked and raised his hands appealing for handball the instant it happened those who didnt see it happen clearly only watched the highlights and made a cuppa while that part was shown.
Moyes wont of mentioned it as he probably had a bad view of it (like the refereee apparently)

It’s just as well that the right result table means nothing. As everton would be an embarrasment if they ever got into the Champions League

David, I think the picture above is misleading, the Incident they’re referring to is the one where Carsley is outside the box and has a crack, the ball clearly hit Petrov on the arm, nowhere near the chest or shoulder. Very very similar to the Handball by Carrick (I think) v Chelsea the day before.
As for Phil, The only feelings of embarrassment on Merseyside should be from the RS.
Congratulations your success on spending a fortune (yet again) and finishing 1st in the league of also rans… To make matters worse, you must be gutted when you think that but for a shed load of dodgy reffing decisions this season, Everton would be comfortably above Liverpool, having spent next to nothing compared to Liverpool over the past 5 years.
Give yourself a pat on the back for humiliating yourself in front of everybody on the site.

Where’s the Chelsea v. Man Utd. right result? One of the most important and controversial games of the year, you’d think it’d be worth reporting on?

phil: guessing he’s an lfc fan just look at what a joke liverpool r 300 million and they have to rely on refs to qualify for europe agaist a team that has spent vey little in comarison

Steve: Guessing he’s an efc fan.
In the recent Merseyside derby game their may have only been 1 goal but the difference in class was there for all to see. I support Villa by the way and we outclassed you at Goodison too

I was in the Gwladys Street and shouted for handball when Carsley had that effort blocked - but Everton don’t get penalties!
I have a lot of time for Villa as they have a good history, nice ground, smart manager and a decent group of players. Also know a few Villa fans and they are sound…
…but I still think we should have won!

We are never going to get a penalty this season so i have stopped appealing. I think this must be a record, 37 matches so far without a penalty, not much chance of getting 1 against newcastle, they might bring collina bak out of retirment to make sure we dnt get into europe again.

Phil - you outclassed us at Goodison too? Is that the match where Clattenburg gave you an undeserved penalty, sent off Hibbert after Gerrard had a word about the yellow card, failed to send off Kuyt for a shocking tackle on Neville, and refused Everton a nailed-on penalty in the dying seconds.
You’re a right bitter gobshite, eh?

Cant believe you guys are still going on about this now, true you have been hard done by quite a few times this season but so have other teams, look at fulham, newcastle, spurs etc they have been on the wrong end of bad decisions too, infact if the decisions had been right utd would have been crowned champions already. Cant say i see all those supports on here still complaining, time to move on prehaps?

Oh how I wish I could see every incident that everyone else sees and has an opinion of when out there in black. It is so easy to review things after the event but bloody hard to see things sometimes. Sometimes there is little explanation of why a ref missed something but the laymans ignorance of the laws are responsible for nost of the misunderstandings. IMHO.

We (Villa) had it in our hands to take 5th before the Wigan game, and we should have beaten Everton at Goodison but we didn’t.
So well done Everton
17. efc85 | May 23rd, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Villa didn’t deserve anything at the Everton game. The Wigan game shows that they can’t compete at the same level as Everton and that they have a tendency to lose the easier games.
